Europe

A 2-month Backpacker’s Plan for Europe

When I first started planning my European trip, I wondered how I would fit everything I wanted to see into two months. The very real truth is that it is impossible. Europe is massive and each country is so different from its neighbor that you need to spend some actual time at each spot! For each country I went to, I visited the major cities and left the smaller ones on the “next time I’m here” plan.  From towering mountains to iconic man-made metal structures, Europe has it all. Euros and Zlotys, kabobs on the street and crepes cafes, each country in Europe offers a new experience.

I had just planned out my two months of travel in New Zealand and Australia, so I felt pretty confident when I began booking this trip. As a teacher, I only have the summer months to travel. If I could, I would extend this trip for two more months! However, I know some travelers don’t have as long or as short of a time to travel so use this as it bests fits you!

This trip does allow for some down time and a few relaxation days to recharge!

Days 1-5: Lisbon, Portugal

After arriving on a late flight, we checked into the This is Lisbon Hostel and toured the city. We toured the Castelo de S Jorge, Elevadora Santa Justa, and drank sangrias and drafts in the streets in a local celebration. Lisbon is a relaxing city that serves as a great beginning location for your trip! We caught trains to the nearby cities of Carcavelos, Sintra, & Belem. Make sure to catch some Fado, or traditional Portuguese music.

Days 6-10: Lagos, Portugal

Stepping off the brief bus ride from Lima, sand and sun greeted us. Waves, surfers, and hidden beaches make it a vacationers delight. We spent a day touring the city and catching random soccer games before making the decision to book a 3-day surf class. Hands down, an amazing experience, although my legs were ready to give out on my every 20 seconds on the last day! Also, catch a free walking tour of the city.

Days 11: We caught a bus from Lagos back to Lisbon and waited 6 hours for our overnight train to Madrid. I’ll only say this once, when booking an overnight train spring for the private room!

Days 12-14: Madrid, Spain

A little tired, we stashed our luggage and toured the town. The Royal Palace was an awe-inspiring sight and led us to the Temple of Debod. Madrid’s a big city that offers flashy luxuries and is drastically different from Lagos!

Days 15-19: Barcelona, Spain

After an eight hour bus ride, we arrived in sunny Barcelona and checked into our Airbnb. We wandered the streets and found small little things to do. We also made sure to visit Park Gruell and the Sangrada Familia. Stained glass was everywhere and the hectic streets of Las Ramblas  was a new experience. From beach to city, Barcelona offered it all!

Days 16-19: Pamplona, Spain

Need I say more than the running of the bulls. Wine, people, parties, and white clothes everywhere.

Days 20-27: Ordino, Andorra

I participated in a week-long volunteer program called Earthwatch and hiked the mountains every day! An amazing small country worth visiting. The Tour de France also spun through!

Days 28-31: Paris, France

We entered the city of love and everyone was incredibly friendly. There are so many historic/iconic sites such as the Louvre or Eiffel Tower. Make sure to try a crepe and sample several wines!

Days 32-35: Amsterdam, Netherlands

You need to rent a bike and go. Bike lanes are everywhere and fruit stands sell delicious fruits. Check out the red light district to see a few things you never thought you could and beware the red curtains!

Days 36-39: Berlin, Germany

The easiest way to get around this city is to bike. The hostels provide easy to read maps that highlight key sights. Be ready for some heavy history and architectural wonder! Also, be sure to try the sausages and steins at local pubs!

Days 40-43: Prague, Czech Republic

Prague’s Old Town is exactly like stepping back in time! Make sure to see the Astronomical clock and try Trdelnik, which is cooked over hot coals! Don’t fear the jazz and take a boat ride to see the city lit up at night!

Days 44-48: Krakow, Poland

The city of Pubcrawls and late nights, vodka, salt mines, and history. When visiting here make sure you book trips like the salt mines or Auschwitz camp ahead of time! Krakow was one of my favorite locations and the locals and tourists alike were all so friendly! It was the perfect place to end the trip!

Have you been to Europe? Did I leave out any of your favorite places in the cities? Let me know in the comments!
