Europe

Destination: Prague

From Berlin, this 5 hour bus ride was a piece of cake. The 40 minute walk to our hostel felt far longer! One thing that requires a big adjustment is the KofC to USD ratio. For instance, looking at the menu, I gasped in surprise when I saw the price of a chicken kabob lunch was 158. Currently, the ratio is .04 KofC = $1 USD. It took my brain some time to register this adjustment every time I saw prices! My blonde hair had nothing to do with this difficulty, I solemnly swear.

Our walk to the Airbnb was far from boring. We saw a huge tower with large metal babies crawling up and down it. It was 90% creepy and 10% interesting. After settling in we went to the beer garden for ciders and brats. They were delicious, however the language barrier was tough to tackle!

Official Day 1: Walking to Old Town, we mixed with the massive crowd and watched the Astronomical Clock go off at 1. Skeletons moved and a trumpet rang out from above. It was pretty nifty and the crowd roared with applause.

When in Old Town, you need to try their famous dessert. It’s dough cooked over hot coals and covered in sugar and cinnamon. This dough is in the shape of a thick cone and filled with ice cream. It’s called Trdelnik!

We looked at the older buildings, strolled through a peacock filled park, and made our way to Lennon Wall. This was one of my favorite parts. Painted messages and pictures of positivity, love, and hope were spread all over it. While we were looking at it, a girl even gave me her paint and brush to add my own quote on the wall. By now, the pink “Be the Change You Wish To See” has probably been covered up 20 times over!

We moved on to the castle. At its entrance, we were welcomed by guards and huge statues of men striking down other men. There are so many statues and gargoyles in this place! Literally, the weight of the world (or the building) rests on their shoulders. This castle was huge and not really even a castle. It was a large enclosed area that had a beautiful church and that was about it. It was more of a small town instead of castle.

While we were hunting for food, he discovered a 90’s arcade/bar for Pac-Man and alcohol. The loser had to buy the next round. I bought all the rounds…

Day Two: We took on the art museum. The art inside was alright, but it was the art on the outside that was the most fun. Between fun house mirrors and giant sculptures of faceless babies, my inner child ran wild with joy. Coincidently, these babies and the ones on the tower we saw on the first day were all made by the same artist!

Heading to Lenta Park, I enjoyed a few bubbly beverages at a tap garden before heading to our Jazz Cruise. Drinks, food, live music, and seeing the city lit up was a fun experience to be had by all! On our stroll back after the cruise we checked out the famous Charles Bridge , which was less crowded at night but full of pick pockets, so beware!

Prague was one of the most genuine and authentic cities I have ever been to. Their older buildings have been preserved and they have continued many dated and wonderful traditions. It’s a place to go to catch a bit of culture, brew, and delicious dessert (Trdelnik) that’s sold on the street. Keep on traveling my friends!
